The first question comes to your mind will be, what Instagram really is?
In a nutshell, Instagram is a photo sharing app which allows users to assign filters to photos and share them with followers. It comes with a multi feature connecting people all around the worlds. Instagramers can sync their photo sharing to other social networks, so Instagram photos can be posted directly to Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Flickr, and Foursquare which is a very good feature and saves a lot of time there.
Who uses Instagram the most?
Instagram location demographics
Instagram is one of the most popular social networks on a global level. The US has the most users at 116 million, followed by India at 73 million and Brazil at 72 million. This international presence makes the network appealing to both brands and influencers alike. How does Instagram works?
To start using the service, you’ll need to sign up for an Instagram account. You can log in with Facebook, or provide your name, email address, and set a username and password. You can even create multiple Instagram accounts, should you ever need to.
Once that’s done, you should download Instagram for Android or Instagram for iOS. You can also install Instagram for Windows 10, which is basically a port of the mobile app.
While Instagram has a desktop site, it’s fairly limited. It’s passable for browsing your feed, but Instagram is designed to be used on a smartphone.
Instagram isn’t much fun without people to follow. Hit the magnifying glass icon on the bottom bar and you’ll open the Discover page. Here you’ll see pictures/users Instagram thinks you might like, along with categories at the top. Use the Search bar at the top to look up people you want to follow.
On a profile, just hit the Follow button to subscribe to their posts. From then on, you’ll see their content on your Home tab. You can unfollow an account at any time by following the same process.
Notably, you’re able to set your Instagram profile to private. This means that only people you approve can see your posts. When someone wants to follow you, they must send a request that you confirm, or else they can’t see much on your page. It’s just one way to make Instagram more private.
Finally, keep an eye out for the blue checkmark on profiles. This signifies a verified profile, which means Instagram has confirmed it’s actually that person and not a fake. We’ve previously detailed how to get verified on Instagram if you’re curious.
Once you’ve followed some accounts, your Home tab will become a much more lively place. On it you’ll see posts from those you follow. At the top, Instagram shows the profile pictures of people who have a new Story for you to view.
Just tap one and you’ll start watching the Stories. You can tap the right side of the screen to jump to the next section of that user’s Story, or slide to skip them entirely. You should know how Instagram screenshot notifications work if you plan to grab copies of them.
Posting on Instagram
To upload a new post, just tap the Plus icon in the middle of the bottom toolbar. Here you can choose to take a new photo or video, or upload an existing picture from your Gallery. You can add several pictures to one post, as well.
After you take your photo, you can apply one of Instagram’s many filters with just a tap. Photo pros can also manually make changes using the Edit tab.
Finally, add a comment to your picture, tag people and mark the location if you want, and choose whether to share it to other social networks. Once you hit Share, your picture will appear on your profile and in your followers’ feeds.
Adding to Your Story
To post new content to your Story, slide over to the left. This will open a whole new panel with a range of options. These include Boomerang (a short video that loops), Music to add some tunes to your Story, and Type to enter text. You’ll also find the Live option, which lets you broadcast from your phone in real-time to your followers.
Covering Stories in-depth is beyond the scope of this article, so have a look at our basic Instagram Stories tips and tricks and tips to make your Instagram Stories stand out.
Why Use Instagram?
You might be wondering what the purpose of using Instagram is when there are so many other social networks around. The main draw of Instagram is that it’s based around photos, which are super easy to take with a smartphone. You don’t have to carry around a camera to share the world around you—just snap a photo, apply a filter, and you’re good to go.
Even if you don’t care about photography, using Instagram as a “lurker” (where you follow others but don’t post) is totally fine. It can be a fun way to keep up with your friends, and many celebrities also give glimpses into their lives through Stories.
While it’s not a concern for the average person, using Instagram as an advertising tool is also pretty common. Some Instagrammers use the service to amass followers, sharing photos solely designed to build a following. They then promote their blog or try to sell products to make money, using common Instagram captions along the way.
More Fun With Instagram
We’ve taken a look at what Instagram is, some basics on how Instagram works, and why you might want to give it a try. There is more to Instagram, but this article should have given you a good rundown of how to start using it yourself.
If you don’t remember anything else from this article, just know that Instagram is a social network built around sharing photos and videos. It’s become popular thanks to its simple filters that make your smartphone photos look better with little effort.

Your feed is your business card and the face of your business. Behind every face, there is a personality. Your Instagram theme is that personality. Which is why it is important to get that right.
In this, I’ll tell you:
- Which Instagram layout you can use
- How to rearrange your Instagram photos to make a theme
- And some super simple – but SUPER IMPORTANT – tricks
Let’s get started!
1. Choose a grid layout
What is a grid layout?
A grid layout is how your posts are positioned in your feed. It helps you know what photo to put next to another photo. A layout makes it easy to start (and stick to) a consistent Instagram theme.
There are 9 types of Instagram grid layouts you can create. I went into details about each one.
Here are 2 layout examples from people who use Preview app to plan their feeds:

2. Choose a theme
Call it vibe, mood, soul. An Instagram theme is how your Instagram feed looks like overall.
It is your visual personality.
So what do you want your theme to be? Grunge, moody, boho, tropical, colorful, minimal or white?

3. Choose what you want to post about
A theme is not just about the colors in your photos. It is also about what you post and talk about.
This is an optional step.
But if you are a blogger or a business owner, I strongly recommend you think about what you are the most passionate about and what you want your Instagram to be known for:
Look at our favorite Instagrammers right now. Most of them usually talk about the same topics all the time. They talk about what they are passionate about and this is why you are following them. These topics make people want to come back for more.
So what are you passionate about? Pick a few things you absolutely love (between 1 to 5 things). And then post about these things all the time. This is your content, your story, your theme. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine.

4. Pick ONE filter and stick to it
A theme is nothing without a filter.
Using the same filter on your photos, all the time, is the easiest way to start a theme.
Where to find filters to make a theme? There are many different Filter Collections in Preview app: White, Fall, Dark, Colorful, Pastel, and more… Pick a filter and stick to it.
Look how consistent a feed looks like when you use the same filter on all the photos all the time:

5. Rearrange the order of your posts to make your feed flow
At this stage, you have a layout in mind. You know what you want your overall theme to look like. You know what you want to post about. And you have a filter.
Perfect!
Your theme is starting to look really good!
Now, you need to make it flow.
Why do some Instagram accounts look SO good?
They look SO good because they know which photos look nice next to each other.
The trick is to rearrange the order of your posts to make your overall feed flow.
It can be hard trying to guess what photos you should post to make your overall feed flow. This is when Preview app comes very handy.
You can use your Preview to rearrange the order of posts, and see what your Instagram feed will look like before you post on Instagram. Just upload your photos / videos / albums in the app, and drag and drop them to move them around. If a photo doesn’t fit, just delete it from your Preview feed.
Ok, but which photo should I put next to each other?
Take your time to move your photos around until you are happy with the overall look of your feed.
If you are using a grid layout, it will be easy to know what to post and when. For example, if you are doing a tiles layout, you know you will have to alternate between a quote and a photo. Easy.
If you are not using a specific grid layout, your goal is to balance your feed.
To balance the look of your feed, space out your photos based on the colors in them, or even the subject or background. Generally, people avoid putting photos that are too similar next to each other. They space them out. By spacing out photos that are too similar, they create contrast between each post. This will make your overall feed look balanced.
Here is an example from someone who uses Preview. Can you see how she spaces out her photos?

This simple tip will transform your feed: Pay attention to the background of your photos and quotes. Keep it clean.
Don’t let the background distract from your main subject – unless the background is part of your strategy to get the attention of people, like a cool feature wall or the Eiffel Tower.
Let’s have a look at the same feeds. As you can see their background are pretty clean and simple:
